When you need a receipt in Canada
In Canada the same information tiers apply to receipts as to invoices when your customer wants to claim input tax credits: from $100, your GST/HST number and the tax paid; from $500, also their name, a brief description and the terms of payment.
Receipt or invoice?
An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that payment has been made. If you already sent an invoice, the receipt can refer to its number.
Every required detail, thresholds, record keeping and e-invoicing, with links to CRA.
Questions
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks for payment. A receipt confirms that payment has been made.
Does a receipt need to show GST/HST?
If you are registered for GST/HST, it is good practice to show the tax included in the amount paid. In Canada, a business customer needs the tax charged (or a statement that it is included) and your GST/HST number to claim input tax credits on purchases of $100 or more.
Can I give a receipt for a cash payment?
Yes. Choose the payment method, set the date paid, and download the PDF.
